Want to Relieve Stress or Anxiety? Try Reiki!Dec 03, 2021
You might be thinking, Reiki? Really? Isn’t that a woo woo thing? How could that help me?
It might surprise you to know that reiki is used throughout the world, including in hospitals and hospices, as a complement to other forms of health care.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is an energy healing technique that reduces stress and anxiety, and promotes relaxation. A Reiki practitioner does this by acting as a conduit between you and the source of God/Oneness/Higher Power energy, to deliver this energy to your body through their hands.
This is done remotely or in person. This guided energy flow is intended to improve the balance and movement of your energy to support a peace and wellness.
The patient’s body naturally determines the energy flow from the practitioner’s hands by taking only what they need.
Mikao Usui developed reiki in the early 1900s. He derived the term from the Japanese words rei, meaning “universal,” and ki, which refers to the vital life force energy that flows through all living things.
There is no touching involved If you have a remote session. You may have light touch, if you prefer, during an in-person session. Both during an in-person or remote session, you remain fully clothed at all times.
What does reiki feel like?
You may experience the energy in the form of sensations like tingling, pulsing, or heat where the Reiki practitioner has directed the energy with their hands. Sometimes people feel little to nothing physically, while others feel sensations moving throughout the body.
What is it like to have a session with you?
As a Reiki Master Teacher, I do 45-minute remote reiki sessions either via a phone call or Zoom. You pick a place where you are comfortable, either lying down or seated.
Since it is common to fall asleep during the session, it is important for you to pick a place for your Reiki session, where you will be safe if you fall asleep.
When we’re on the call, I explain the process briefly which is:
I say a brief prayer. Walk you through a grounding visualization exercise. Begin directing positive, loving energy thorough my hands towards the first of your seven main chakras. As I proceed to each chakra, I explain which chakra I’m working on and a give brief description of the chakra. At the end, I balance your energy and ground you again.
Here are some of the Reiki benefits my clients have described:
- A woman, whom I saw for several months, was experiencing chronic pain and was able to sleep better after our Reiki sessions.
- After each session during a couple of months with a male client, he said he felt more relaxed and lighter.
- A woman got relief from pregnancy symptoms in one session.
- After a single session with a man, who had recently received devasting news, he said Reiki helped relieve his intense sadness.
- During a woman’s first session, she said that she felt a profound sense of peace and calm.
Reiki sessions should not be used as a substitute for the consultation of a physician, psychotherapist or other licensed medical professional. It should be used rather to complement other types of medical and therapeutic treatments, and it can increase the efficacy of other types of healing,
